Mid-August to late September is considered the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, with activity typically highest around early September. For pool owners, this means it’s now time to prepare. According to experts, 13 to 19 named storms this year, and there’s a 70% chance one could come within 50 miles of the coast. Pools can be easily damaged during hurricanes if not adequately secured; they may fill with contaminated water or even cause structural issues.
According to Colorado State University’s 2025 forecast, there is a 44% chance of a hurricane and a 19% chance of a major hurricane this season. With risks this high, early preparation isn’t just thoughtful; it’s essential.
- Don’t Drain Your Pool — It Can Cause Damage
Draining your pool before a storm might sound like a good idea, but it can cause severe damage.
Pools are built in the ground and rely on the weight of the water to stay in place. During heavy rain, the underground water level (called the water table) can rise. If the pool is empty, it becomes lighter than the surrounding soaked ground.
This can lead to hydrostatic pressure pushing the pool upward, which may cause it to crack, shift, or even dislodge from its foundation.
What to do instead:
- Reduce water level slightly (1–2 feet max).
- Maintain enough water to weigh down the structure.
- Let excess rainfall overflow naturally.
- Protect Your Pool Equipment
Floodwaters and lightning pose serious threats to your pool’s electrical systems. Before a storm hits:
- Shut off circuit breakers connected to pool equipment.
- Wrap pumps and filters in waterproof plastic or tarps to protect them from the elements.
- Store removable components, such as heaters and vacuums, indoors if possible.
- Shock the Pool Before the Storm
With debris and runoff expected, pre-treat your pool water to minimize contamination:
- Use chlorine shock treatment 1–2 days ahead of the storm.
- Add an algaecide if your area is prone to warm rain and plant debris.
- Consider using a floating chlorinator if you expect a power outage.
- Clear the Deck: Secure Loose Items
Even if you don’t live near the coast, strong winds from a storm can throw pool furniture around and cause damage or injury. To stay safe, bring chairs, umbrellas, and toys indoors. Please don’t put them in the pool; they can damage the liner. Also, remove and store solar covers, skimmers, and safety nets before the storm hits.
- Landscape Smart — Minimize debris
Downed trees and branches are a common sight after storms. You can reduce cleanup by:
- Trimming overhanging limbs and fragile shrubs now.
- Remove dead branches from trees near the pool area.
- Check your gutters and French drains to ensure they direct water away from your home correctly.
- Shield Against Flooding
Flooding can damage your pool system, especially if it rains heavily. Take simple steps to protect your equipment.
- Place sandbags around the equipment pad to serve as a barrier and protect it from damage.
- Elevate essential components using concrete blocks to prevent water damage.
- After the Storm: Safety First
Once the hurricane passes, wait for the all-clear from local authorities before assessing your pool.
- Look for electrical hazards and avoid touching wet equipment.
- Remove large debris manually before restarting your filter system.
- Test and adjust water chemistry: pH, chlorine, and alkalinity may all be out of balance.
- Restart pumps only after confirming everything is dry and undamaged.
